District Water Activities Day

This is a great opportunity for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers to be involved in this level of activity. We have once again selected Essa as our provider to give us as leaders, and you as parents, utmost peace of mind.
Sailing will most likely be in Laser ‘Funboats’ or ‘Optimists’. These are virtually impossible to capsize, and will take 2-3 young people in each boat. Given a decent wind, these are highly manoeuvrable and great fun. Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) will test Scouts’ and Explorers’ balance and agility whilst moving at speed across the water in a mesmerising display. Mega SUP is just unbelievable fun – these gargantuan Paddleboards can move at remarkable speed when all on board are paddling in harmony. Which is not always the case!
Essa will provide instructors and safety boat cover for these activities. Our leaders will also help supervise from the safety boats, and we will have two leaders in the water with Beavers for Mega SUP.
Participants will need to be water confident i.e. they won’t panic if they fall in.
They will be kitted out with buoyancy aids and wet suits if needed. Plus helmets for Mega SUP.Tee shirts and shorts are ideal clothing in good weather. No long trousers. They MUST wear their own soft soled shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and dirty. No sandals or wellies.Old trainers are fine; alternatively water shoes may be purchased at Sports Direct, for around £7. Bare feet are not allowed for any of the activities.
They will obviously also need dry clothing/towel etc. to get changed into afterwards, plus some food!
Parents/Carers will be required to stay in the vicinity to help their children get ready for the activities and changed back again afterwards. Note that there are showers and changing facilities at the centre but that parents/adults are not allowed in these while the children are changing. Bringing a changing robe may be helpful.
Essa is at Central Lagoon, Meadgate Road, Nazeing Broxbourne EN9 2PB. It’s about a 40 minute drive from Borehamwood. Car parking is free. Please arrange car shares with other parents to minimise car park congestion. Posting your requirements on your section’s facebook group is a good way of doing this.

Beavers: 13:30-16:00
